Coalition to Ban
On January 27, a milestone was reached for the citizen-initiated statute, the Ohio Dog Auctions Act. More than 118,000 signatures from all 88 Ohio counties were certified by Secretary of State, Jon Husted. The proposed law has now moved to the Ohio General Assembly for passage by April 1.
Citizens from across Ohio served as the catalyst for the Ohio Dog Auctions Act. These voters and taxpayers, along with thousands of voters from the humane community, strongly endorse this ballot initiative as an effective way to address a major distribution channel serving puppy-mill breeders from 15 states, many of whom have long-standing, repeat violations of the Animal Welfare Act and/or have been convicted of animal cruelty.
Ohio ranks sixth (up from seventh in 2010) in the number of U.S. Department of Agriculture-licensed high-volume breeding kennels. Voters and taxpayers can no longer wait to move on regulating an industry fueled by heartbreaking animal cruelty, corruption and consumer fraud.
The time has come to serve as a strong voice for the dogs by casting your YES vote for the Ohio Dog Auctions Act!
| 2012 Ohio Companion Animal Lobby Day! Please join advocates from across the state for the 2012 We will be hitting the halls of the The Ohio Statehouse to advocate for bills and a ballot initiative to address issues impacting the welfare of companion animals that are occurring right here in Ohio. The day will be action packed – a briefing, luncheon reception and a rally at The Ohio Statehouse, all of which will provide the perfect grassroots opportunity for us to urge state legislators to recognize animal cruelty, dog auctions, puppy mills and breed-discrimination legislation as serious issues and take action to effectively address them in Ohio. And - you don't need to be an expert in lobbying to take part! There are many new legislators in Ohio as well as incumbents, who do not yet know that Ohio is only one of four states which does not have a first offense felony animal cruelty law and has enacted statewide breed-discrimination legislation. And many may not be aware that Ohio has the only dog auction east of the Mississippi which attracts buyers and sellers from 15 states, many of whom have long standing, repeat violations of the Animal Welfare Act or have been convicted of animal cruelty. All Peaceful Rally! Recap of October 8, 2011 Peaceful Rally Against Ohio Dog Auctions and Puppy Mills! A HUGE thanks to the 17 supporters from six counties who served as a strong voice for the dogs during the October 8 Peaceful Rally against Ohio Dog Auctions and Puppy Mills in Millersburg, OH!
A special thanks to Rachel Lauren of Rachel Lauren Photography who did a fantastic job capturing the essence of our event! We are also pleased to announce that as of October 9, we have reached both the Ohio Secretary of State's minimum required signature goal and our 'stretch' goal for Holmes county! This is an incredible milestone in our campaign, given that Holmes county serves as 'ground zero' for puppy mill breeding in Ohio! Again, we greatly appreciate the efforts of so many dedicated animal advocates across our communities!
